An ideal destination for active families, the local area is packed full of things to see and do. A short drive takes you to Cairnsmore of Fleet National Nature Reserve, one of the wildest areas within south-west Scotland and a site of Special Scientific Interest within the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere. The area boasts a wide range of habitats popular with both wildlife (peregrine falcon, hen harriers and red deer) and wildlife enthusiasts alike, not to mention the hill from which the reserve takes its name โ Cairnsmore of Fleet, rising 711m in elevation.
This small town is also home to Creetown Gem Rock Museum and cafe, where you can view its collection of rare and beautiful crystals from around the world.
The nearby town of Newton Stewart is heralded as the โgatewayโ to Galloway Forest Park, a 300 square mile area of forest and hills with Dark Sky Park status.
